Shade Loving Fern Pre-Potted Duo | Holland Bulb Farms - Ferns are one of the most recognizable plants and are ideal for adding textural interest and color to a shady area! Our Shade Loving Fern Duo contains a Burgundy LaceJapanese Painted Fern and a Western Sword Fern. Both prefer part shade areas with morning sun and afternoon shade along with rich, moist but well-drained soil. These two fern varieties are very different in color and size but together create a a perfect pair! The Burgundy Lace Painted Fern (Athyrium Nipponicum) foliage will emerge green and turn to a beautiful silvery-green color with purple midribs as they mature. Reaching up to 24 inches tall and wide, this little fern works well as a border in your shade garden! In contrast, the Western Sword Fern (Polystichum Munitum) have bright, green, glossy foliage that can reach 36-72 tall and wide! The more robust Western Sword Fern is a perfect backdrop for the more compact Burgundy Lace Painted Fern! Ferns are very low maintenance and adapt easily to new environments. We recommend leaving the foliage in tact over Winter to help protect the root system during dormancy. They can be cut back to 1-2 above the soil level in early Spring, before new growth emerges.
